Home Security

Once you move to a new home, you have to think about more than just the decorations and the furniture that you’re going to pick for your living room. You also have to take into account some seemingly unimportant things, or the things that we take for granted, such as home security.

Moving to a new neighborhood is also one of the key reasons why you should invest in securing your home, as burglars can strike unexpectedly and you still don’t know how many of them are prowling your new neighborhood. There are many ways in which you can secure your house and while some might be more fun than others, all are quite effective. Take a look:

Secure the doors

The first and most obvious way to secure your new home is by securing the entrance door. Since 34% of burglars actually enter the house from the main door, the first thing you should do is check if all the door frames are strong and if the hinges are protected. It is also very important to change the locks if you are moving to a home that had an owner prior to your arrival, as this is how you will ensure that nobody else has the key to the door – the best idea would be to go with a deadbolt lock or a smart lock.

Install security cameras

Next up, always have the option of installing a security camera (or cameras) above the entrance door and in the backyard. This will allow you to always see who or what is lurking close to your house, which can often prove very useful. The good thing is that you can also check the cameras live from your smartphone, so you can always see what is happening in front of your house. Of course, if your budget allows you, install security cameras in all the hidden corners of your backyard and around your house.

Hide your firearms

Plenty of homes in the USA own a gun. Even though this is still a topic that is up for debate, in plenty of states it is legal to own a loaded gun if it’s in your own house and if you want to use it for your own protection. However, this is not something that one should take lightly, as it affects not only your own safety, but the safety of your kids and other people you live with as well.

This is why, if you own a gun, you really should consider investing in a high-quality gun safe where you will store your weapons and keep them out of sight of children, guests and other family members. According to the CDC, almost 7.000 people in the United States died from unintentional shootings between 2006 and 2016, so take care of your loved ones.

Light up your house

One of the most cunning ways you can secure your house is actually the cheapest and the most obvious one – lighting. Apart from leaving some of your lights on when you’re out of your house, it would be good to invest in good outdoor lighting in order to discourage potential burglars. However, this is also killing two birds with one stone as you can use the outside lighting for your own quiet nights in.

The places where you should include lighting are, apart from the back and front yards, the pathways and the places near the garage and other outdoor buildings or structures you may have. You can always opt for motion-activated lights as these always scare away the burglars and they save a lot of electricity.

Think of the windows and hiding places

Finally, do not forget about the windows that you should reinforce. Burglars very often search for “windows of opportunity” and this is why it is very important to keep them closed and locked. If you can set up a security system such as an alarm, feel free to do it – this is always highly recommended. Another thing that you should have in mind is minimizing the hiding opportunities for burglars.

Most people grow various plants and flowers under their windows, which makes them perfect hiding places not only for animals but for people as well. Put away all of your stools and ladders that you might have in the vicinity, lock your gates and sheds, and never leave any goods in the yard as this will only attract burglars.

Having said all this, try to find the best and most appropriate method for you to successfully secure your new house. It might not seem like the easiest task, but it’s definitely not something that you should spend a lot of money and time on. It’s just a simple routine and investing in doors and windows as they are the most frequent points of entry.
