Your back has been killing you lately and you’re not sure why. You haven’t done anything to put a real strain on it. The truth is, that may be the cause right there.

You haven’t done anything. You work at a desk all day, you go home, prepare dinner, then sit down and watch TV until it’s time to go to bed. Mix and repeat this process day after day and eventually, health problems will arise from it.

To help you see the error of your ways and get started on a healthier lifestyle, here are all the issues that can come from this sedentary behavior.

1. You Won’t Burn as Many Calories

Walking, running, fidgeting, and even standing in place all burn calories to some degree. In fact, the only action that won’t allow you to burn any calories at all is sitting still at your desk or on your couch for 8+ hours a day. 

Keep in mind that even if you work at a desk you can mix things up a little. Go down the hall and get water from the fountain. Walk to a restaurant during your lunch instead of drive.

If you have the luxury of having a home office then try to get the best electric standing desk for it instead of sitting. All of these things will help you burn calories. 

2. You’ll Gain More Weight 

As you can imagine all of this sitting and lack of burning calories will cause you to put on a little weight. Your body’s metabolism drops and soon, its ability to burn away fat stops altogether for the most part.  

If you tend to eat sugary snacks and drinks when you’re at home lounging on the couch, then all of this can catch up to you and cause obesity.  

3. It’s Linked to Disease

Obesity can lead to several other diseases. The main one being diabetes. The calories that you’re not burning can cause insulin resistance throughout your body. This resistance contributes directly to type II diabetes. 

Other health issues you may face are heart disease and high blood pressure. The more weight you gain, the harder your heart has to work to pump blood through your body. This takes a toll on the little guy. 

4. It Hurts Your Mood 

When you exercise your brain releases feel-good endorphins throughout your entire body. If you sit all day without any exercise at all, your body can’t release these chemicals so you’re left feeling crummy. 

The weight gain can also cause your self-esteem to take a hit which can lead to depression and anxiety. 

5. You’ll Have a Higher Risk for Cancer

Having a higher percentage of body fat can cause your risk for cancer to go up. A large number of fat cells could start the process that leads to your cells growing and dividing rapidly. 

Not to mention that you could experience some sort of inflammation which tends to attack your cells. 

6. You May Start to Forget Things

Exercise does more than get your blood pumping. It jump starts your mind and gets it going faster than your morning coffee. If you sit all day you will find yourself forgetting things at a faster rate then you used to. 

Over time this could lead to mental disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. You’ve got to exercise to keep your mind young. 

7. Your Sex Life May Take a Hit 

Yes, sitting all day can even start to mess up your life in the bedroom. Men with larger waistlines are more prone to experience erectile disfunctions than others. 

Men aren’t the only ones who are affected. Remember when we talked about self-esteem earlier?

That can hurt your performance no matter your gender. You’ll also feel so bogged down physically that you won’t be in the mood for it. 

8. You Won’t Get Enough Sleep at Night 

If you don’t wear your body out during the day then it will have no reason to wind down at night. By sitting all day and not performing any physical activity, you will find yourself tossing and turning more than sleeping. 

On the flip side of this, if you exercise too close to bedtime that will kick your brain into gear and make you just as restless. You’ve got to pick the right time for it

9. Sitting Too Long is a Real Pain in the Back

The longer you sit at your desk or on the couch the more pressure you’re putting on the disks in your back. Over time this will lead to disk degeneration. The main cause of back pain.

So, take some time during your day to take the pressure off. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself paying a chiropractor to realign your spine.   

10. Osteoporosis 

Your muscles aren’t the only thing in your body that’s meant to move. Your bones and joints need you to move around so they can remain strong.

If you sit all day every day then your joints will start to wear down faster. This can lead to osteoporosis.

Know How Sedentary Behavior May be Hurting You

If you’ve been experiencing more back and neck pain than usual it could stem from the fact that you’re sitting too much.

This sedentary behavior can lead to more problems than a sore back such as obesity, osteoporosis, lack of sleep, dementia, diabetes, and even cancer. So, get up and get moving. Your body will thank you for it on down the line.
